Max Wardell, DPT, CSCS, CAFS, TARS is the Director of the Overhead Athletic Institute and a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy specializing in the rehabilitation and performance of throwing athletes. A former collegiate pitcher, Max played two seasons for the Concordia University Ann Arbor varsity baseball team before transferring to Oakland University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences with a concentration in Exercise Science.
Following his collegiate career, Max completed a three-year apprenticeship under Ed Martel, founder of the Overhead Athletic Institute, orthopedic physical therapist, and former professional pitcher. Through this mentorship, he developed extensive expertise in throwing mechanics, rehabilitation, and performance training.
Max is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and holds a Certification in Applied Functional Science (CAFS) through the Gray Institute. He serves as an instructor for the Overhead Athletic Institute educational programs and Martel Method continuing education courses.
In addition to his educational and clinical roles, Max works as a throwing athlete rehabilitation consultant and physical therapist with HealthQuest Physical Therapy. He is the co-author of Rehab to Throw Like a Pro: The Clinician’s Guide and author of Arm Alloy: Complete Rehabilitation and Training of the Throwing Athlete. Max has also been published in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy for his research on shoulder instability in baseball players.
